About Us

We are a small group of enthusiastic writers and we welcome people who share our passion for creative writing to join us to share your efforts & ideas, improve your technique, or just to enjoy the readings of the other members' work and the creative atmosphere!

We invite you to be our guest and come along to the next meeting. To learn about the Circle, share in our news, plans and readings of our work, and, if you enjoy yourself, to become a member! Aspiring writers and interested parties, at any level of experience and skill, are welcome.

The Pretoria Writer’s Circle has Meetings on the first Saturday of every month from 09.30 a.m. to (approximately) 14.00 p.m. These meetings are held at Alkantrant Library (directions below). Check the Pretoria Writer’s Circle FACEBOOK PAGE for further details.

Poetry Meeting: 09h30 – 11h00 (Where pieces are read and discussed)

Aspiring poets are challenged to write a poem on a selected topic for reading and critique at the following monthly workshop and also to share their other original works of their own choice of topic, or published pieces they admire.

Poetry Convenor: Mieke Boon de Gelder

Open Meeting: 11h00 – 12h00 (To read / share your writing with other writers)

Members share written pieces (of no more than 1,000 words) on the monthly topic. The Open Meeting also consist of a 10 Minute Learning Slot were we look at the real time questions of a writer.

Chairperson: Jo-Marie Barlow

Prose Meeting: 12h00 – 14h00 (Where pieces will be discussed and critiqued)

Members share opinions and constructive criticism of each other’s work, discussing ideas, style and technique.

Attendees are invited to bring 15 copies of a piece of prose of up to 2,500 words (or longer with the prior agreement of the other members) which are handed out to other members that day and discussed at the following meeting a month later. Many readers offer written comment of the piece which is returned to the author for later review at leisure.

Occasionally key writing topics such as dialogue, scene setting or other technical issues are presented and reviewed. The meeting is closed with general discussion or further discussion on the 10 Minute Learning Slot topics.

Prose Convenor: Michelle Bouwer

The Pretoria Writer’s Circle also hosts an Open day around the end of the year where we invite an experienced writer to share their knowledge with us.
